NACTEC Session 12-Small Engines

By Brian Marvin, Teacher, NACTEC

What is a camshaft? How are 4-stroke engines different from 2-stroke engines?
Seven students from the Bering Strait Region and 2 students from the Tanana School District answered these and many other questions about engines while attending NACTEC’s Small Engines course offered in session 12. Students disassembled a 5Hp Briggs and Stratton engine, reassembled and started the engines. Great Work!! What an amazing feeling of accomplishment.

The following students got some grease under their fingernails:

Dorinda Sagoonik-Shaktoolik
Ben Merculief-Stebbins
Charles Merculief-Stebbins
Fred Rock-Shaktoolik
Doris Adams-Koyuk
Luann Charles-Koyuk
Roy Anasogak-Koyuk
Ruby Campbell-Tanana
Cassandra Joseph-Tanana

Students explored and trouble shot all systems needed for a small engine to function properly. The governing system is crucial with small engines used on generators and snowblowers. Ask one of our students to explain the purpose of the governing system. Students saw first hand how to troubleshoot this system. Many of the small engines systems work in accordance with each other. When you see Dorinda, Ben, Charles, Fred, Doris, Luann, Roy, Ruby or Cassandra ask them how the systems work together. If you are broke down on the trail I hope one of these folks comes along to help. Great work Folks.
