April was an action packed month for skiers in the Bering Strait School District. The first weekend started with two annual ski racing events. Shaktoolik hosted the southern elementary schools district ski race, and Nenana hosted the 22nd annual Western Interior Ski/Biathlon Championships (WISA) at Birch Hill Ski Center in Fairbanks.
Shaktoolik Elementary Ski Race
Forty-five skiers representing five schools (Golovin, Koyuk, Unalakleet, St. Michael and race host Shaktoolik) participated in the ski races (April 3rd and 4th) held in Shaktoolik. The following photos are students enjoying the competition.

Western Interior Ski/Biathlon Championships WISA
Nenana hosted WISA and races were held at Birch Hill in Fairbanks. Birch Hill ski trails have been skied on by some of the fastest skiers in the world. On April 2nd through April 4th, BSSD skiers had a wonderful experience racing on the world-class ski trails. The WISA 2009 fifteen-member team was made up of skiers from Golovin, Koyuk, Saint Michael, Unalakleet, and White Mountain.

Unalakleet’s End of Ski Season Picnic
Hot dogs, tree climbing, hill climbing, skiing, and just hanging out under the purest blue sky entertained community members of Unalakleet by SBS (Shyler’s Broken Ski) Loop. One could not ask for a more fantastic day with a gathering of energetic Wolfpack skiers and family members. Thanks for a great season and supportive community that lends a welcome hand!

A BIG thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Persons for all the work they put in for our students as well as our very own Wolf Pack Skiers! Time after time I see Mr. Persons packing down the ski trail through wind, snow, hail or rain.
Our kids really enjoy the ski program . Thank you both very much!

It’s great to see the Unalakleet skiers in the mix. In all the years (14) I’ve worked in the Activities Office, our school has never done so well in skiing. Good job to Nancy and Chris Persons! The students look great and it’s so cool to see them enjoying themselves skiing! Keep up the awesome work, we love it!
My mom told me that when the children gets more flexibility at their education they can give their 100%, so its been a great work to the authority to organize these kind of curriculum activities.
wow my hair was long ghee great time tho
