It’s great to see the Unalakleet skiers in the mix. In all the years (14) I’ve worked in the Activities Office, our school has never done so well in skiing. Good job to Nancy and Chris Persons! I am one of those who don’t know Yup’ik. My Grandmother spoke fluently but not to her five children so her grandchildren and great grandchildren do not speak (four of her sons and daughters had three children a piece). SO approx. 30 Yupiit are without language and culture.

I took it upon myself to take a university course or two on Yup’ik since I do not live in a village. Wish I was in Bethel so I could take the conversation Yup’ik courses at the Kuskokwim Campus.

I am trying to bring it back for my four children but it’s hard without support and time – lots of time! *sigh* and there are lots of other exposure to language in our house (Spanish, Hebrew and English – in addition to Yup’ik).

We will get there one child at a time one, one encounter at a time.

I have introduced waqaa, a word that hadn’t been spoken in our family for four generations.

Boy, the full moon ski looks like great fun. It draws up all the great skiing memories in my brain. I love to ski now as much as I loved it in my kid years. Especially in the dark.

Taku toTim and Sopie of Diomede– made me think back when I was a passenger in a Lund boat that my brother Sonny drove to Diomede! It was a beautiful summer day, he had gone there to pick up his family members that were visiting Ahnah Mary M. .Because there were no landings we had to jump off the boat. I was petrified. A younger brother had to put me on his back to get off. I felt silly but, I was truly scared. There we met relatives and, I had tea w/ Ahnah Mary at her house and it was a lovely ride, and visit. Greetings from the Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington State. My name is Deb Abrahamson and we have formed a group of tribal members to address the concerns resulting from uranium mining on our lands.
We have been working on community education and have developed a radiation/uranium resource section in our tribal library. We have obtained geiger counters so our people can themselves, determine if there is any harmful radiation in their driveways or foundations as uranium gravel was used for these purposes during the 50’s-70’s. A large majority of the workforce in two mines and millsites were comprised of our people and the health impacts have been severe. The toxic chemicals used for mining have infiltrated our subsistence foods, animals, waters, ceremonies, cultural lifeways.

Do everything you can to stop any mining because these poisons only serve to kill the people, waters, lands, animals….we have witnessed loss after loss since mining has taken place on our lands. Much of the information we use came from the Southwest. If we can be of any help, please let us know what kinds of things will help you stop uranium mining on your lands.

Hello, here is some feedback and compliments about your blog entry.

Ideas:
You’re ideas are very clear and to the point, you are saying that school’s students just need a mentor that is a trusted adult who can sit down and try to assist with a student’s concern. You also mentioned that it does not have to be every single day, for hours on end, just 10 minutes would be helpful and appreciated. When it comes to helping someone, a little goes a long way and that is shown in your writing.

An energetic group of BSSD Principals have been meeting together in Unalakleet this weekend to discuss everything from budgets to blogs. The complete day of our second day of meetings is dedicated to technology, including backing up our harddrives, blogging, managing data with spreadsheets and learning to work in the new NeoOffice. We have accomplished alot already!

I am glad to see these students highlighted here on your web site. It is exciting to hear about students from our region who are pursuing degrees. They are great role models and very inspiring. Another thing to keep in mind if you are a teacher looking for educational grants: utilize the expertise of IRA staff members who work in the tribal offices. Some of them have years of grant research and application experience, and may have leads on what sort of educational/social/service grants are available, both federally and via private foundations. TIP: There’s one out there right now, through First Alaskans, that is looking for projects featuring collaboration between communities and schools!
